Tired of waiting for Motorola to update it’s Moto G First Generation (Falcon) to Android 5.1 Lollipop. Let’s try something different here. CyanogenMod, if you’d ask me is one of the purest form of Android out there.

One best thing about custom ROMs is that, you’ve the ability to pick the Google Apps package, like, there’ll be a lot of Google Apps unwanted, like the Google Play Books and Google Play Movies (I never use them). And also, that you can pick the latest version of Google Apps. So, no more waiting for a long time after flashing the desired ROM, for the Google Play Store and Play Services to automatically update itself.

So, let’s hit the tutorial

  • Download the latest CyanogenMod build for your Moto G First Generation (Falcon).
  • Download GApps from here.
  • Copy them both to the ROOT folder of your internal memory.
  • Reboot to recovery (now, you do have to unlock your bootloader and flash a custom recovery. If you’re not sure about that, please Google that up).
  • Hope you know how to get into the bootloader. Power on the device holding down the volume down and power button.
  • So, once you’re in the TWRP recovery. Hit Wipe.
  • Now mark everything except, internal SD card and usbdisk (if an OTG device is connected)
  • Swipe to wipe!
  • Now, tap on install, now navigate to the file you’ve downloaded. Tap on it
  • And swipe to flash
  • Repeat the same step for flashing GApps (you don’t need to wipe anything for this)
  • Click on the reboot button!
